Scope of Job

The Market Commercialization team functions as an internal consulting group to manage initiatives that enable PowerFlex to enter new markets and release new commercial products or services. As a Manager on the team focused on battery storage, you will own the energy storage market entry and modeling strategy, and be a key partner and advisor to our sales, analyst, and asset management colleagues who sell and operate our storage products. You’ll be PowerFlex’s expert on storage markets, determine how to model energy storage projects using internal and external tools, select and vet third-party partners, and train analysts, sales, and operating teammates. You’ll also join customer-facing calls as a subject matter expert to explain how they’ll monetize their battery assets.  

As part of the MC team, you may also work on non-storage projects. As an example, you may use your optimization expertise to enable our EV charging assets to participate in grid services or be enrolled in demand response or VPP programs. 

Location
This role is open to be 100% remote or a hybrid role out of one of our offices (Mountain View, CA, San Diego, CA or New York, NY.) 

Responsibilities

  • 60% - Own PowerFlex energy storage market entry and modeling strategy 
    • Conduct research to stay on top of emerging storage markets and identify markets PowerFlex should enter.
    • Develop the methodology to model storage in new markets and train analyst and sales team.
    • Maintain and conduct periodic updates for fundamental assumptions of storage markets independently and through partnership with analyst team.
    • Maintain standard commercial offer, including contracting terms on operation and guarantees.
    • Work with Asset Management team to identify issues related to storage revenue streams and the Energy Management System and close feedback loop with modeling assumptions.
    • Advise procurement team during selection of new battery vendors to ensure products work with our commercial offer.
    • Provide Optimization & Controls team inputs to develop Energy Management Systems in new markets.
    • Identify, vet, and select third-party vendors to assist in operating our projects in market-facing programs and ancillary services. Coordinate between third-party vendor and Optimization & Controls team for smooth handoff.
    • Research, document, and quantify use cases for new markets or solutions (e.g. grid services, demand response programs, or new financial transaction types).
    • Present market and modeling updates periodically to the company, to sales, and to analyst teams to drive growth in our storage business 
  • 25% - Support PowerFlex teams in handling high-profile and/or non-standard Energy Storage projects
    • Upon request, audit and validate storage modeling of projects prior to contracting. Provide feedback to analyst team on recommended adjustments.
    • Participate actively in the contracting effort (drafting, negotiating, auditing) for high-stakes energy storage projects, with a specific focus on performance guarantees.
    • Join customer calls as needed at the various stages of project development (sales, contracting, development, execution) to educate customers on BESS products & use cases
  • 15% - Strategic growth work
    • Coordinate with policy team to influence legislation or incentive programs for the benefit of our customers’ projects
    • Identify growth opportunities that can result from releasing new commercial products or from entering new markets. Define the scope, timeline, and outcome of the initiative
    • Conduct market and competitive research in emerging markets such as EV charging, grid services, and energy storages and recommend action to grow market share
    • Present on New Market Readiness series at least twice a year to inform company of new markets and products 

Qualifications
Education/Experience

  • Requires a degree in Finance, Math, Economics, Engineering, Energy, or related field. MBA or advanced degree preferred
  • 4+ years experience with commercial & industrial energy markets and battery storage use cases 
  • Advanced financial modeling capabilities using Excel 

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Entrepreneur’s mindset with the ability to get things done quickly with loosely defined processes
  • Excellent verbal & written communicator who can build clear and concise presentations to explain complicated topics in simplified ways to customers and management.
  • Comfortable reaching out to colleagues across the organization and confident in presenting solutions to peers, senior management, and customers.
  • Understanding of U.S. and Canada electricity market mechanisms, particularly on rules which apply to on-site energy applications for commercial & industrial customers.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously with minimal oversight.

Compensation
The pay range for this position is $126,090 - $154,110 annually. This position is eligible for PowerFlex's comprehensive Health and Welfare plans including but not limited to medical, dental, vision, 401(k) retirement plan and paid time off. The total compensation for this position may include an annual performance bonus (or other incentive compensation, as applicable). PowerFlex's compensation packages carefully consider a candidate's qualifications, experiences, and education in relation to the position.

0-1 direct reports, including interns or Rotational Program Associates 

Physical Requirements
Remaining in a seated position. Long hours on the computer keyboard. Prolonged periods of standing and/or walking.   

Working Conditions
​​​​​​​95% of time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of various Microsoft Suite and proprietary energy modeling software), phones, and general office equipment. Travel up to 5% is required, typically to conferences or offices in NYC, Mountain View, CA, and San Diego, CA 

Fiscal Responsibilities
Careful management of third-party consultants and contractors to ensure appropriate use of Company resources.
